In Rocky Mountain National Park west of Estes Park Colorado, Cub Lake and Fern Lake trail heads are reached by driving west from the Beaver Meadows entrance station on US-36, quickly turning left onto Bear Lake Road, and taking the second right onto Fern Lake Road (not well marked). The trail head is typically open during the winter because it is east of the Trail Ridge Road; which is closed October to June.
